Speaker Wayne Leichty: Fractional currency was introduced by the U.S. federal government following the outbreak of the Civil War. The Civil War economy catalyzed a shortage of U. S. coinage-gold and silver coins were hoarded given their intrinsic bullion value relative to irredeemable paper currency at the time. Five series of notes were issued between 1862-1875. A total of 24 major types were issued, ranging from 3 cents to 50 cents.
Wayne will have displays of his collection. Public Welcome and No Admission Fee. Parking is across N. Market St. from the church.
